Metrology is at the heart of what we do. It provides a proof point of the precision we achieve and establishes a foundation of truth that we can feed back to our wider team and our customers.

Our Metrology team uses sophisticated precision measurement equipment and sophisticated programming skills to maintain ultra-precise measurements and adhere to tight tolerances. Using non-destructive 3D analysis, we can achieve:

  • topographical measurement to identify fine details and features invisible to the naked eye.
  • show details of important features, such as plating thickness on a screening can or the angle of a formed part using X-ray fluorescence (XRF)
  • radially (as opposed to geometrically) measure challenging, bespoke features like a post or dowel to an angle within half a degree.
  • analytical levels far beyond those possible using light microscopy using our super-high levels of magnification capabilities

Our dedicated team has a deep technological understanding of metrology and uses all the resources available to them to provide a valuable feedback loop both back to our inhouse engineering professionals and the customer. In this way, we can make sure – and prove – that the results we produce are aligned to the original specification and requirement. Even if there is a slight differential, we can work with the customer to explore and define an alternative manufacturing approach in order to achieve the desired results.

The flow of development in the field of metrology is advancing at speed. We are able to achieve continuous improvement due to this feedback loop. This robust process gives the Tecan Business insights to help us feed back quantifiably and qualitatively to our customers at a micro and sub-micro scale, measured in micrometres.

Ultimately, our metrology capability and ongoing investment in this area as an organisation heralds a new era of micro precision manufacturing. More importantly, it helps us to consistently and continuously exceed customer expectations.
