But why do we do these things on April 1st? There are a number of theories, including when France moved to the Georgian calendar from the Julian calendar in 1582. Until then, the new year was celebrated around April 1st – the time of the Spring equinox.
Those who were slow to get the news or refused to acknowledge that the start of the new year had moved to January 1 and continued to celebrate it during the last week of March through to April 1 became the butt of jokes and hoaxes and were called “April fools.”
